This is a list of notable changes in Another Code: Recollection and how the story is different, also including changes to both DS versions of Another Code: Two Memories and its North American version Trace Memory.
This list will heavily feature spoilers.
Another Code: Two Memories
- The remake starts in media res with Ashley in the forest; she stumbles upon a rock avalanche and collapses. She then opens her eyes and stands up. The game then goes to the boat ride after.
- Ashley can definitely seem less angsty and moody compared to Trace Memory, and she seems less annoyed and angry at Jessica. Ashley also receives a hug from her.
- Captain's boat is named the Rosa instead of the Martina, after his wife Rosa Fox who is now confirmed to be his wife.
- Captain no longer gives Ashley candy.
- Ashley unpleasantly sits on a wooden stool when a locked gate is in her way.
- Ashley hears Jessica's scream near the Edwards' Mansion and comes across gates that are locked tight. However, in the original, she heard it earlier while at a drawbridge she needed to lower.
- On the way to the Edward Mansion, it is clarified the Edward Company was mining gold. This is consistent with a beta screenshot from the DS game.
- D is able to be transported to another spot on the island as a ball of light instead of fading in and out.
- It is revealed D can not phase through walls, which makes the story make more sense as he could simply phase through the mansion to search for Richard.
- There was a small hut in the DS game which is removed.
- Ashley and D have to solve a puzzle using door knockers which is new. In the DS game, Ashley had to throw an iron ball onto a hand statue to unlock the way.
- Ashley already considers D a friend before they enter the mansion.
- Edward Mansion is revamped to include multiple floors now while exploring, and it now has a courtyard. The remake also sends the player to Frannie's room and the art room earlier.
- Frannie's puzzle is about dolls she made, rather than a stamp puzzle.
- It is shown both Frannie and Ashley are into piano, something unmentioned in the DS game.
- Bill Edward appears quite earlier in the story, right after the piano puzzle this time, still posing as Ashley's father. He also now has her search for Another keys.
- Bill (while posing as Richard) angrily shouts at Ashley for refusing to give him the Another keys since she wanted Bill to answer her questions. Bill (as Richard) didn't act like this in the original game.
- Marie's letter to her former husband Henry Edward no longer mentions he once waved a knife around her and Frannie, which encouraged them to leave the island.
- Richard is unconscious in a locked room at the lab, instead of the room that belongs to Lawrence Edward.
- Ashley doesn't assume Richard is Bill and she doesn’t interrogate him either, since she remembered his face when she saw him again.
- Ashley's hug caused Richard to fall on the floor in the laboratory.
- This time, Bill's motive for selling ANOTHER is more driven by financial gain rather than revenge on Sayoko and Richard.
- Bill does not interrogate Ashley about her memories of the night of Sayoko's murder, since Ashley recognizes him almost instantly during the confrontation as Sayoko's murderer.
- During the confrontation, D no longer says "You are making Frannie cry" to Bill.
- Instead of a chasm, Bill and D now fall into a lake created by the springs in the caves, which is where they possibly drowned.
- It is now confirmed that Bill is Frannie's son through a picture of them in the cave, rather than implied like in the original game.
- Ashley can investigate Bill's laptop revealing he was chatting with someone in J.C. Valley, the buyer for ANOTHER. This is later revealed to be Ryan Gray.
Another Code: R - A Journey into Lost Memories
- Ashley's bag is stolen by Matt, not Sofia. This can be seen as a very sensical change, as it can be argued Sofia stole Ashley's bag too easily, and Sofia somehow managed to outrun Ashley using high heels which can be seen as goofy. Still, in the remake, it was Sofia who had him steal the bag.
- Sam Hillman (as well as Lucy Graham) are omitted from the story, likely because they are incredibly minor characters in the original.
- Because of this it is now Bob who instructs Ashley on how to talk to Charlotte
- Mike Tyler is now known as Ian Tyler (for unclear reasons, but most likely done to prevent any confusion between him and Michael Crusoe).
- Gina, Ian and Sofia are now at the campsite earlier.
- Sofia no longer pretends to be Gina as Ashley had already met them at the same time.
- The RAS (called TAS in the Wii localization) changed from being a controller to a wristband.
- Ashley now owns a phone and no longer complains to her dad about not being allowed one.
- As such Richard no longer messages her through the D.A.S.
- Judd's burned down house is no longer visited by Ashley and Matt.
- Ashley and Janet are no longer classmates. Janet is also no longer Elizabeth's cousin and does not call Rex Uncle as a result. (She still does so in the Japanese dialogue, even though their relationship is not clarified beyond that)
- Ashley and Matt work together to retrieve the briefcase in the lake using a radio-controlled boat toy. In the original, they used a life ring.
- In the original game, Richard appeared during the conversation between Ashley, Matt and Elizabeth. Richard began to take Elizabeth's claims more seriously, calling Ashley to vent at him being the worst father in the world.
- In the original game, Matt buried a letter written by his mother to him as a special treasure.
- When Greg Davis tells Ashley his name is John Smith, she does not question it in the original, but in the remake, she points out that it definitely sounds like a fake name.
- Ashley does not return to Richard's cottage between her first visit to Bob's food hut, Ryan's home and the Alfred house.
- Matthew is now with her when she visits the food hut the first time.
- Ashley does not receive phone calls inviting her over to the other houses, instead meeting the characters in the street.
- The kaleidoscope now belongs to Ryan rather than Sayoko and Ashely does not receive it.
- Janet now thinks Ashley can help Elizabeth due to their mutual love of music rather than them both having scientists for fathers.
- Tommy is now with them in the visit to the Alfred house.
- Ashley recognizes Princess in an old photo and realizes she is Elizabeth's dog much earlier in the game.
- Princess was now taken away by Elizabeth's mother rather than being chased out the house by Rex.
- Janet now damages the music box rather than Ashley.
- Rather than losing her music player, Elizabeth hid it within the music box.
- Ashley is now thrown out the house after Elizabeth has a fight with Tommy rather than being asked to leave after discovering letters from Elizabeth's mother that Rex had been keeping with her. Janet no longer stay to comfort her as a result.
- The sequence where Matthew gets sick is cut.
- Ashley does not get her bag back until much later in the game.
- Charlotte now prefers being called by her first name as opposed to Mrs. Graham.
- Matthew is now with Ashley when retrieving the clocktower keys.
- Charlotte now knows Michael Crusoe from when he was a boy. Michael now visited her with Matthew to offer to pay from the up keep of the clocktower instead of apologising for his workers vandalizing her garden.
- Olivia's letter to her mother is now hidden within a puzzle box left in the greenhouse instead of inside a book of Gilbert's photography left in her room. It is also revealed Olivia was pregnant.
- Elizabeth and Princess' reunion is shown in a cutscene now instead of as an easter egg scene via the now absent connect function on the D.A.S.
- Kelly died by falling from the clock tower instead of at the boathouse. In the original, the person falling from the clock tower was an unconfirmed rumor.
- Kelly's ghost is seen a few times before her proper appearance in the Crusoe offices. She now appear to Matthew after he remember her death to tell him not to blame himself. She leaves her doll behind now and the spirit of her mother is seen as well.
- Ashley does not tell Matthew about D in this version.
- Ashley learns Greg's real name from a newspaper instead of him telling her.
- Greg reveals that Michael is in the hospital and he's also in a comatose state. He takes Matthew to go see him. In the original game, Matt stayed with Ashley a bit longer and he was rejected at the entrance of J.C. Valley by Sofia, as he was not related to any staff members. Ashley told him to wait at Charlotte's house.
- Sofia no longer escapes from J.C. Valley as she was apprehended and taken to the police.
- Gina is now shot instead of Rex.
- Ashley now confronts Ian about being Greg's informant.
- Ian reveals himself to be a special agent investigating J.C. Valley.
- Despite his redesign, Richard's picture from his youth remains the same as in the original. Ashley is no longer embarrassed about it.
- Richard no longer has his memories temporarily erased.
- Judd's laptop is no longer featured along with his confession.
- Having died fifteen years ago, Ryan is now projected into Ashley's mind as opposed to being alive in the original.
- As such, he is no longer the one who manipulated Bill into killing Sayoko and Ryan didn't want to murder her.
- He is less cruel, but also more kind and empathetic than in the original.
- Rex is now the only non-deceased person who knew about Ryan's tragic circumstances.
- Jessica physically goes to Lake Juliet to check on Ashley and Richard, and she returns home with Ashley in the ending.
- In a flashback, Sayoko and Ashley are shown to be riding the bus to Lake Juliet, instead of driving a gray car to the location.
